Nordic Semiconductor expands into Sub-GHz: long-range connectivity, security and edge AI for smart metering and asset tracking

According to Nordic Semiconductor's announcement (Nov 5, 2026), the company is expanding into long-range, licence-exempt Sub-GHz connectivity with integrated ultra-low power, security and edge AI. Sub-GHz radios carry signals over long distances and through walls and underground meter pits; because the bands are licence-exempt, networks can run without a mobile operator or data plan. Nordic says battery-powered devices such as water meters, asset trackers and building sensors using the solution can stay in the field for years on a single battery, protected by built-in security and processing data locally through edge compute. The solution will combine ultra-low power, security and edge compute across Sub-GHz and DECT NR+, built on the company's 22 nm ultra-low-power platform. Nordic says it will focus on open standards while also supporting, through a flexible modem, the proprietary protocols used in installed networks; developers keep the same Nordic software, tools and cloud services. Sub-GHz will join a portfolio spanning Bluetooth LE, Wi-Fi, Thread, Zigbee, Matter, Cellular IoT, satellite/NTN and DECT NR+. Developers can join the early adopter programme at nordicsemi.no/sub-ghz; Nordic will be at Enlit Europe (Nov 10-12) and Electronica (Nov 10-13).
